Family adjustment in the USA: How the American education system works

If you want to immigrate to the United States with your family, you're certainly thinking about providing better welfare and education for your children. American education is diverse and renowned for its quality: an excellent option for your family.

School education

Just as it works in Brazil, American education is divided into different levels. These stages are called elementary school and secondary school. Elementary school is known as elementary school, while secondary school is divided into two phases, called middle school and high school

At the end of high school, students will receive a diploma or certificate proving that they have completed their studies and will thus be able to enter a university.

Homeschooling

Homeschooling is a common and very popular practice in the United States. According to the National Home Education Research Institute (NHERI) there were 3.7 million homeschoolers in the United States in 2021 - 5.22% of all American students are homeschooled.

If you're a fan of homeschooling, you should know that in the USA you have complete freedom to give your children an education that reflects your family's values .

Quality public and private schools

In the latest PISA ranking, which measures the quality of education among all OECD countries, the United States ranked 13th and 19th in reading and science, while Brazil ranked 58th and 65th in the same subjects.

The United States has excellent public and private schools, including secular schools and schools of all religious denominations: an excellent destination for your children's education.

There are more than 98,000 public schools in the United States, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. According to Schoolaro - an American education company - these are the states with the best public education systems in the United States: New Jersey, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Vermont, Massachusetts, New York, Maine, Colorado, Pennsylvania and Virginia.

SAT: the American entrance exam

If your children already study at a bilingual school or if you've researched how the admissions system works at American universities, you've probably heard of the SAT exam.

The SAT - Scholastic Aptitude Test - is an exam taken by students wishing to enter various American universities, and has three tests: mathematics, reading and interpreting texts, and writing. As is the case in Brazil, there are several preparatory courses for this exam in the USA, since the country's most prestigious universities, such as Harvard, require a score on this exam to carry out the admissions process for their future students.

Save money on your children's university

You can save thousands of dollars on university fees by being a resident of the United States and of the state where the university you want to enroll your children in is located. Being a resident means having an address in the state: being an American citizen or holding a Green Card.

In many American universities, the annual fees for resident and non-resident university students differ significantly.

The University of Michigan, for example, charges around 38,000 dollars a year in fees for residents and 80,000 dollars a year in fees for non-residents. A difference of 42,000 dollars a year, which can add up to more than 200,000 reais a year in savings if you and your family are green card holders and residents of the United States.

Dollar salaries, a great quality of life and an excellent education for your children: America is the ideal destination for you and your family!

EB-1 and EB-2 visas

Many professions are on the rise in the United States!

If you're a doctor, psychologist, airline pilot, engineer, physiotherapist, programmer or nurse, your profession could be your passport to America.

You can get your green card using your expertise as a professional. This is possible thanks to the Immigration Act of 1990, which created the EB-1 and EB-2 visas in order to develop the United States through the flow of qualified immigrants into the country.

The EB-1 visa only covers professionals with extraordinary skills and international recognition in their field, which is why most qualified professionals are eligible under the criteria of the EB-2 visa category.

EB-2 visa: Am I eligible?

If you have a bachelor's degree, at least five years of professional experience and exceptional skills in your field, you may be eligible for a green card!

And in this visa category, if you are approved, your spouse and children under the age of 21 will also receive their respective green cards.

All this without the need for a previous job offer in the United States.
