How to become an accountant in the United States

If you're Brazilian and want to immigrate to the States, you're not alone: more than 23,000 Brazilians obtained their Green Cards in 2022, a record number in the historical series.

And most of these migrants - unlike in the past - no longer abandon their careers in search of the American dream, but use their careers as a passport to America.

How to validate your accounting degree in the USA

If you have a bachelor's degree in accounting in Brazil, you will need to validate your diploma in the United States through FACS (Foreign Academic Credentials Service). This institution provides equivalence services for international accounting degrees in the United States.

What you can't get right away is the license to act as a CPA(Certified Public Accountant). This license is similar to the CRC (Regional Accounting Council) license that exists in Brazil.

Salaries

According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics the average annual salary of an accountant in the United States is 86 thousand dollars. These are the states with the best average annual salaries for accountants in the United States:

  • District of Columbia: 110 thousand dollars.
  • New York: 110 thousand dollars.
  • New Jersey: 102 thousand dollars.
  • California: 96 thousand dollars.

CPA: Certified Public Accountant

To get your CPA license you will need to meet the requirements of the state board of accountancy in which you wish to reside and practice accountancy. All American state boards of accountancy are registered with NASBA (National Association of State Boards of Accountancy).

Each state has its own peculiarities, but all of them will require you to pass the CPA exam and be proficient in English

According to the Brazilian Federal Accounting Council, the CPA exam ensures that future accountants in the United States have the basic knowledge and skills necessary to protect the public interest.

It is worth remembering that passing these exams validates your professional license as an accountant in the United States, but in order to receive authorization to live and work permanently in the US in any career, you will need to obtain your Green Card from US immigration.

EB-1 and EB-2 visas

The Immigration Act of 1990 created the EB-1 and EB-2 work visas, which facilitate the migration of qualified professionals from all over the world to the United States. These professionals use their CVs as passports to America.

The EB-1 visa only covers professionals with extraordinary skills and international recognition in their field, which is why most qualified professionals are eligible under the criteria of the EB-2 visa category.

EB-2 visa: requirements

If you have a bachelor's degree, more than five years ' experience in your profession and exceptional skills in your field, you may be eligible for a green card in the EB-2 category.

And in this visa category, if you are approved, your spouse and children under the age of 21 will also receive their respective green cards.

All this without the need for a previous job offer in the United States.

America: the ideal destination for your family

Whether you want to enhance your professional career, earn your salary in dollars, move permanently from Brazil, or secure a stable and prosperous future for you and your children, America is the ideal destination for you!
