Chemical Engineering in the USA: How it works

If you're an engineer in Brazil and want to immigrate permanently to the United States, you're not alone! In 2022 around 23,000 Brazilians received their Green Cards, a record number for Brazilian immigrants.

Unlike the majority of Brazilian immigrants in the past - when many gave up their careers to pursue the American dream - the profile of these new immigrants is made up of professionals who obtained their green cards using their professional experience.

This is because the American government created the EB-1 and EB-2 visa categories in 1990 through the Immigration Act

The Immigration Act was passed to facilitate the entry of qualified immigrants into the US in order to promote the technical, economic, social, environmental and scientific progress of the United States.

Engineering is an essential career for the technical and scientific development of a country, so you can fulfill the American dream by using your expertise as a chemical engineer.

Career and salaries

According to the US Bureau of Labor Statisticschemical engineering careers in the United States are projected to grow by 14% by 2031.

What's more, a career in chemical engineering has excellent salaries in the United States. The average annual salary of a chemical engineer, also according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, is 117 thousand dollars. These are the average annual salaries for chemical engineers in states with the best employment:

  • Texas: 148 thousand dollars.
  • Pennsylvania: 109 thousand dollars.
  • Ohio: 102 thousand dollars.
  • California: 117 thousand dollars.
  • Michigan: 112 thousand dollars.

And the sectors with the best average annual salaries for chemical engineers in the United States are: oil and gas extraction (165 thousand dollars), crude oil transportation (159 thousand dollars), petroleum and coal products manufacturing (138 thousand dollars) and waste treatment and disposal (136 thousand dollars).

There is a shortage of engineers in the United States that could reach 6 million by 2026, according to official US government figures. And thanks to the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, signed into law by the Biden administration in 2021, the engineering sector is heating up with work being carried out by the US federal government.

If you can prove to U.S. immigration that your career is of national interest to the U.S. and that your resume meets the requirements for eligibility, you can get a green card under the EB-1 or EB-2 categories.
