Living in Texas: What are the advantages?

Texas is a state historically targeted by immigrants and it's no coincidence: according to the United States Census Bureau, 17% of its residents are born outside the state, a figure 3% higher than the American average.

In 2022, Texas had a population increase of 13%, making it the third state in the United States in terms of the flow of migrants, behind Utah and Idaho. And in the period from 2009 to 2016, according to the Texas government, the state was the largest recipient of immigrants in the United States, followed by Florida and Colorado.

With an ever-increasing flow of migrants, Texas is certainly a friendly state for anyone looking for opportunities in its territory.

And one of the things that makes the state of Texas attract so many immigrants is the low tax burden compared to other wealthy US states, such as California.

Lower taxes

All US residents and citizens pay federal income tax, just like in Brazil. But unlike in Brazil, there is also a state income tax in the United States. By way of comparison, the states of New York, California, Hawaii, New York and New Jersey have the highest income taxes in the United States, with rates of over 10% each.

And the state of Texas exempts you from this type of tax, which is certainly one of the biggest advantages of being a Texas resident!

Sales tax in Texas is 6.25%, and the following are exempt from this tax in the state: groceries, prescription drugs and over-the-counter drugs.

Security for you and your family

In addition to being a state with a great tax burden and many professional opportunities, Texas also has very safe locations. A safety study carried out by SmartAsset in 200 major US cities in 2023 concluded that the 4 safest cities are in Texas. They are: Frisco, McKinney, McAllen and Plano.

Education

The University of Texas is an excellent university for your children: according to the World University Rankings 2023, it is the 22nd best university in the United States and ranks among the top 0.2% universities in the world.

And as well as being an excellent university, Texas resident students pay around 28,000 dollars a year in university fees, while the figure for non-residents is 56,000 dollars a year. A US citizen or green card holder who is a resident of Texas will pay much lower fees to study at this university - and the same is true in many states, where residents have lower university education costs.

There are many advantages to living in Texas and the United States, and certainly migrants seeking security and stability look to these destinations to ensure a good quality of life for themselves and their families.
