How much does a surgeon earn in the USA?

Medicine and general and specialized surgery are excellent careers in Brazil. And you can further enhance your expertise as a professional by immigrating to the United States on an EB-1 or EB-2 visa.

Shortage of surgeons in the US

In a study released in 2021 on the medical market, the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) estimates a shortage of 15,800 to 30,200 surgeons by 2034.

The long time it takes to train a surgeon and the cost of training this professional are factors that influence the slow replacement of this professional in the job market.

Surgeons of all specialties earn excellent salaries in the US, which has a mostly private and highly developed market.

Salaries

According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average annual salary of a surgeon in the United States is 347 thousand dollars. These are states with excellent average annual salaries for surgeons (different specialties) in the United States:

  • West Virginia: 365 thousand dollars a year.
  • Minnesota: 354 thousand dollars a year.
  • Texas: 331 thousand dollars a year.
  • Illinois: 319 thousand dollars a year.

According to a study by Doximity, a company in the American medical sector, these are the annual salaries for different surgical specialties in the USA:

  • Neurosurgery: 788 thousand dollars.
  • Thoracic Surgery: 706 thousand dollars.
  • Orthopedic surgery: 624 thousand dollars.
  • Plastic surgery: 571 thousand dollars.
  • Vascular Surgery: 557 thousand dollars.
  • General Surgery: 451 thousand dollars.

Unprecedented opportunity in Tennessee

In 2023, the Tennessee Senate passed Senate Bill 1451, which makes it possible for foreign medical graduates to practice in the state through a temporary license as of July 2024.

And foreign doctors who immigrate to Tennessee under these conditions can, after two years, transform their temporary license into a "Full Unrestricted License" to practice freely in the state.

EB-1 and EB-2 visas

You, as a doctor, may be eligible for a green card through the EB-1 and EB-2 visa categories.

EB-1 and EB-2 category visas were created by the US government through the passage of the Immigration Act in 1990. These visas encourage the migration of skilled professionals from all over the world to the United States, and the US government waives the need for a prior job offer in the US for those who are eligible.

EB-2 NIW Visa: Requirements

If you are a surgeon, have more than five years ' professional experience and exceptional or extraordinary skills in your field, you may be eligible for a Green Card!

And, if you are approved for a Green Card under this visa category, your spouse and children under the age of 21 will also be granted their respective Green Cards.

All this without you needing a previous job offer in the United States.

America needs doctors!

Medicine is an essential area for the well-being and development of the United States, and doctors have a high chance of being approved for green cards in the EB-1 and EB-2 categories.

You, as a specialist surgeon, have scarce expertise for the American market.
