EB-2 Visa for Doctors

If you are a doctor with aspirations of practicing your profession in the United States, the EB-2 Visa could be the key to a successful career in America. In this article, we'll explore what you need to know about the EB-2 visa and how it applies specifically to medical professionals.

What is the EB-2 NIW Visa?

The EB-2 NIW visa is a category of visa intended for professionals with exceptional skills and/or advanced degrees who wish to work and live permanently in the United States.

Because it is a permanent residence visa, its holders are automatically green card holders and are authorized to live and work in the United States indefinitely.

Professions essential to the well-being and security of the United States, such as medicine and aviation, are eligible for EB-2 NIW visas. NIW stands for National Interest WaiverNIW means that, for reasons of national interest, the American government waives the requirement for the applicant to present a previous job offer in the United States, if the presence of that professional is essential for the country.

Specific Requirements for Doctors

Education and work experience

In order to qualify for the EB-2 visa, a doctor must have a medical degree that can be validated in the United States. And, if they want to migrate as a specialist, they must present their credentials and previous work experience.

In order for a foreign doctor's diploma to be validated in the US, the medical school from which the doctor graduated must be accredited in the World Directory of Medical Schools. And in order to obtain their license to practice medicine in the United States, the doctor holding this diploma will need to take the USMLE(United States Medical Licensing Examination).

Benefits of the EB-2 NIW Visa

The EB-2 NIW visa is one of the visas that takes you to American citizenship! A green card holder, after at least 5 years in the United States, can apply for US citizenship if they meet all the rules imposed by US immigration and the US government.

Your Journey to Medical Practice in the USA

The current shortage of doctors and other health professionals in the United States is also affecting public health systems. That's why, in 2023, the Tennessee Senate passed Senate Bill No. 1451, which makes it easier for foreign medical graduates to enter the state as of July 2024

This is a unique opportunity for foreign doctors to work in the United States.
