How to validate your engineering degree in the United States

If you are a Brazilian engineer and have ever thought about working and residing permanently in the United States, engineering may be your gateway to living the American dream

Experienced engineers who meet U.S. immigration eligibility requirements have a high chance of getting their green cards. President Joe Biden signed into law in 2021 the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, which provides $1.2 trillion in federal investment in infrastructure, creating great job opportunities for engineers who want to work in the United States.

To work as an engineer in the United States you will first need to validate your degree in US territory and obtain your US professional license.

And for that, you will need to take exams administered by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) and fulfill the requirements of the engineering board of the US state in which you have decided to practice your profession.

Each state has its own rules, but in general, you'll need: an undergraduate or master's degree in engineering from a program recognized by the Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC), four years of experience in your field as an engineer, and pass the NCEES exams.

Remember: the process of validating your degree does not guarantee that you will be able to work in the United States. To receive permission to work and live permanently in the United States, you must obtain a Green Card. You can also choose to try to get your Green Card before validating your degree to have more predictability in this process.

How to get a Green Card?

If a skilled worker proves that he/she has exceptional abilities in science and can contribute to the academic and scientific progress of the United States, he/she may be eligible to obtain a Green Card under the EB-2 NIW visa category.

This type of visa was created by the US government in 1990 to encourage the migration of skilled workers to the United States, and this causes professionals from all over the world to seek better opportunities in the US.

EB-2 NIW visa: What are the requirements?

If you are an engineer, have more than five years of experience and exceptional or extraordinary professional skills in your field, you may be eligible for a Green Card!

Engineering is a field of national interest for the United States, and its expertise is highly valued in America.

And, if you are approved for a Green Card under this visa category, your spouse and children under the age of 21 will also be granted their respective Green Cards.

All this without you needing a previous job offer in the United States.

Whether you want to enhance your professional career, earn your salary in dollars, move permanently from Brazil, or secure a stable and prosperous future for you and your children, America is the ideal destination for you!
