If you are planning for your child to study at an American university, you have certainly looked into what types of visas are required for university students in the United States.
The visa commonly used by students is the F-1 category, which allows full-time students at universities, seminaries, conservatories, colleges, elementary schools and other language training institutions or programs to reside in the United States for the duration of their academic activities.
This student visa also does not allow this student to work in American territory, as it is not a Green Card. Contrary to what happens in Brazil, where most universities of excellence are public, in the USA, these outstanding universities are private. And the tuition fees charged by these universities vary according to the content to be studied by the students and, depending on the university, the origin of the candidates.
Most students who are accepted to Ivy League universities (Brown University, Columbia University, Cornell University, Dartmouth College, Harvard University, Princeton University, Pennsylvania State University and Yale University) must pay high fees for their degrees, as few students get scholarships for academic performance or low income.
Still, foreign students who do not have permanent residency in the United States (non-green card holders) pay higher fees to study at many U.S. universities, in a way that benefits those who are already Americans or permanent residents of the U.S. The fees are higher for those who do not have permanent residency in the United States.
Many universities, such as the University of Florida, University of Alabama and the University of Michigan charge much higher fees for non-residents of their respective states, in amounts that can double in size for non-residents and foreigners.
The University of Michigan, for example, charges $33,555 in costs for an in-state resident undergraduate student for 1 academic year, and $72,153 for the same period for a non-resident student. An excess amount that exceeds 35 thousand dollars per year, which in 4 years corresponds to approximately 560 thousand reais difference.
The difference in costs for American residents or those of the respective states of the universities is substantial, which makes obtaining Green Cards even more interesting for your family, as you will achieve good savings on student fees if your son or daughter holds a Green Card and an American residency when attending an American university.
E-5 visa
Investing in the United States is one way to get a green card, but it is not the only way.
The EB-5 visa allows you to obtain a green card by investing in a business that creates jobs in the United States. But the minimum investment to apply for an EB-5 visa is 800,000 dollars and the visa is conditional on the existence of the enterprise.
You can invest in the United States so that your family is eligible for green cards, but there is another option if you do not want to start a business in the US.
EB-2 visa
And this option is an EB-2 visa. Even if you have the capital to invest in an E-5 visa, you don't necessarily have to choose to try to get a green card this way.
If you are a professional with a solid career, have more than 5 years of experience in your field, and work in a strategic sector for the United States, you may be eligible for a Green Card under the EB-2 category.
And in this visa category, your spouse and children under 21 will also be granted their respective Green Cards if you are approved.
All this without needing a previous job offer in the United States.
This can save you thousands of dollars on your children's American education and optimize your resource allocation when moving to the United States.
Invest in your family. Invest in a Green Card.
The certainty of a stable and peaceful future in America for your family is priceless.
